eSource: The world is changing, but ONE thing isn’t

alt text

You may have heard of the Beloit College Mindset list. It comes out every year and reminds us how much the world has changed for 18 year olds as compared to older generations. Here are a few random snippets from a recent list for 18 year olds today:

  1. The Lion King is a stage play based on an old movie.

  2. Vaccines have always been erroneously linked to autism.

  3. They have never licked a postage stamp.

  4. Princess Diana, Notorious B.I.G., Jacques Cousteau, and Mother Teresa have never been alive.

  5. Ebay has always existed.
The world is definitely changing. What I remember as normal is no longer normal. In the church we are seeing the following norms in our Gen Z and Millennial generations:

  6. Online church is normal.

  7. Attending church services regularly is not necessarily normal.

  8. Passion over polish (authenticity beats the best smoke machine).

  9. Digital Worship can be just as good as in person worship services.

  10. World class preachers are only as far as YouTube away.
So, with so much change taking place, what isn’t changing?

To put it simply, the one factor every human being needs is - community. I am a fan of online, but no online service or digital worship will ultimately account for real heartfelt community and connection. As one commentator puts it, “You can never ‘out-local’ the local church”.

So, lately we have been discussing ideas which connect us all together. Obviously the tried and tested strategies remain, connect groups, social connections and Sunday gatherings. But we as a leadership have been chatting lately about ways that we can continue the connection.

Here are some of the good ideas I have heard lately:

  1. A massive (after church) lunch on Sunday eg. Pig on the Spit….
  2. Signups for brekky or brunch at different people’s houses on a Saturday.
  3. Picnics.
  4. The good old church camp.
  5. Community projects eg. Community garden or backyard blitz.
The need for community and connection are unchanging. I would love to hear your ideas for ways we can increase the temperature of community and connection at Catalyst. Email me at carlm@catalystchurch.com.au.

One thing I am acutely aware of is you can’t out local the local church.

The Church WE see
Lee Rasmussen has come to the rescue a few times now to help out when we needed someone to do a fix here and there around the campus. Just last week he made some significant repairs to our kitchen trolley that was literally falling apart. Without the trolley our beautiful Hamper ministry volunteers would have to carry our heavy hampers to their vehicles and that’s just not what we want.

Thank you so much Lee for giving up your time to make these much needed repairs, it was very much appreciated.

(Feel free to send in a story of somebody you have seen that will encourage the rest of us. If you are in doubt if they would be ok for it to be shared, check in with them first. Email info@catalystchurch.com.au).

Hey Baby...Dedication – THIS SUNDAY!
Babies are the best! We love doing baby dedications and as mentioned in previous weeks, we are celebrating our babies again this Father’s Day during our church service.

If you would like your infant to be included in this, or have any questions, please catch up with Pastor Betsy or email betsyj@catalystchurch.com.au asap.

Don't forget that we can do baby dedications after most church services, so you don't need to miss out if these particular days do not work for you.
